THE DEMONSTRATIONS IN LHASA

The event that set off the Uprising and the Flight of the Dalai Lama was the massive demonstration of around 30,000 ordinary Tibetans and monks in the early morning of March 10th in front of the Norbulingka Palace. They gathered there to prevent the Dalai Lama attending a cultural performance at the Chinese Military HQ, as they feared that he would be abducted and taken to China. Around ten to fifteen thousand Tibetan women organized their own demonstrations and processions around Lhasa on the 12th and 18th of March.
